Suspended Villa


Reimagined as an internal landscape, a modular skin of wood and copper creates a serene interior suspended within Beirut’s urban fabric.

The premise of designing this 800 sqm duplex
apartment in Beirut is to offer the privacy of a villa within a building in an urban
landscape. The interior defies the urban context with a material palette
reflecting an earthier terrain.

The central tiling is composed of mid-tone grey
stones, and rests as an organic carpet in the centre of the space contrasted
with the surrounding walls alternating white paint and light-colored stone
cladding.


The ceiling features custom-made copper lighting
fixtures that morph them into warm-lit inverted landscapes throughout the
house.

A wood and copper skin wraps parts of the interior of this “suspended
villa” in different configurations to create different social moments. This
modular skin alternates to create a bookshelf at one instant, and then becomes
a punctured surface at the bar area, covers some walls as cladding and
transforms into a discrete storage system around the chimney in the family
area. &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;The design of the apartment emphasizes clear
separations between private and public, family and guests. This is mediated by
the interior skin and reflected in the material selection envisioned as an
internal landscape where different natures coexist seamlessly.

the space was created to allow for future stories to unfold. Designing around objects that already carry memory and meaning was a fascinating process. It transformed the spatial experience entirely and inspired the integration of new objects. This design process required a
minimal approach to architecture through a precise selection of materials.A palette of oak, rattan, and travertine marble bring a quiet complexity to the interior and serves as a grounding base for the collections. Tonal variations and the nuances within a single material, as well as the subtlenterplay of similar hues across different surfaces

creates a calm, tactile backdrop that brings warmth and continuity throughout the space. 

The materials extend outward from the foyer, natural oak veneer and open-book chiaro travertine marble, which link the reception area, kitchen, and terrace. The kitchen is designed as a living space and connector to the terrace, an extension of the evolving dialogue between space and objects.&#38;nbsp;


Integrated studio pieces, including the Anatomy Console, Archipelago Divan, and Strata Rug, introduce layered dialogues of scale and form. 
Designed as an evolving environment, t

he entire process was deeply personal, which reinforces the space’s timeless quality. The home remains open to future additions, reflecting a living relationship between space, memory, and collecting.

The Eclectic Home
Organic ceiling apertures and sharp architectural lighting converge to create a warm, unobstructed dialogue with a collection of sculptural furniture.


Program: Residential

Soft architectural lines are the focus of this project, transforming home to a cocoon. The juxtaposition of a monochrome palette, earth materials and a pop of colors is used to create a warm environment. This apartment design includes bespoke interventions carefully curated for the family of four as well as a selection of designer furniture. The ceiling is composed of an arrangement of organic shapes on different levels as a strategy for indirect lighting which is coupled with target lighting offsetting from these zenithal shapes.

Sensitive hands-on renovation of a storied Beirut landmark, focusing on the restoration of limestone and timber to honor the building’s original character.


Program: Commercial &#38;amp; office building 
Brief: Facade Renovation


Status: Completed

Scope of work- Architectural supervision- Coordination with solidere

 
Despite being partly
inhabited and previously renovated after the war, the Marfa’ building was
rundown and the façade was in need of some repair. 
This project was a
hands-on renovation that focused mostly on upgrading the building’s material
specifications. The work was guided by two factors, adapting what is available
to comply with the requirements of Solidere as well as choosing the material
that respects the character of the building.

The opaque wooden louvers were
removed to be tinted so the original veins of the wood could be visible. The
exterior wall, made of limestone, were also cleaned and restored.The renovation
involved recruiting a team of contractors, coordinating with Solidere, and
submitting to site checks with Solidere to respond to any comments while the
work is being done.

Crown Bake Facility


Industrial-scale intervention for Crown Flour Mills that integrates high-performance food production with a modern, light-filled architectural shell.

The project is production facility for Crown Flour Mills, a seven-decade old company, and exceptional mill in the region. This new facility houses their most recent product line, Crown Bake, which comprises of specialized flours and mixes.&#38;nbsp;
The
key feature of the building is the double-skin façade on the south orientation.
While the outer skin provides comfort by creating shade to the inner glazed and
fair-faced concrete façade; its design promotes the forward-looking approach of
the company. The glass-fiber-reinforced concrete skin, is entirely customized
and creates variety while using only four panels. Shifted components in the
seemingly orthogonal panel design break the grid and introduce movement in an
otherwise static composition. &#38;nbsp;

At
the engineering level, the building management system integrates differential
environmental controls across spaces ensuring optimal conditions for
production, making the state-of-the-art facility unique in the country. The
principal challenge was designing a facility to be built on an existing
basement and entailed adapting to legacies from the structural columns’ layout.At
the circulation level, the different access points channel visitors,
administrative staff and operators to the proper circulation route aided by an
integrated access control system. It also provides controlled movement of the
flow of raw products, produced goods, and sterilized goods ensuring compliance
with the appropriate food safety norms and regulations. The interior space allocated
for sanitation stations at all access points to the production areas, taking
into consideration future expansion of the activity.

This renovation
project is an extension of the Crown Flour Mills and consists of transforming
the neglected building adjacent to the firm’s factory into office spaces. The
approach for this renovation is to unify the different buildings by selecting
elements from the existing structure and adopting them in the design of the
office building.&#38;nbsp;


The exterior of the
building incorporates a system of vertical louvers that reflect movement onto
the façade while doubling as a shading mechanism for the interior offices. The generative idea behind the design of the façade is to
give the building a unique new identity while blending it in with the site.

As for the interior,
the intervention proposes a more efficient, comfortable and aesthetically
compelling design. The renovation takes place on the first three floors of the
building and aims to make the most of the existing wasted space. With this
design, expansion onto additional floors with new
offices can be implemented in the future if the need calls for it.

Built on a steep slope with challenging topography, this project lends
its layout to a process of giving each apartment a complete experience of the
landscape through eight apartment configurations.Each unit enjoys access to the main view and
secondary view in the back. This was conceived through a set of axes
perpendicular to the main axis of the site and establishing it as an internal
zoning tool for the residential units.


Composed of two
different but complementary structures, the facades reflect the methodology
used to provide each unit with an experience that spans across the site’s
multiplicity. The monolithic exterior shells which are punctured with irregular
window openings, balcony niches and exposed shafts planted with trees work
together to create a unified feel for the project while granting each unit its
individuality, communicating an architectural ethos that engages all its
stakeholders including the surrounding environment with respect.

With bold monochromatic geometry, MFB Studio transforms a functional workspace into a high-contrast sculptural environment that mirrors the creative energy of the brand.

This project is designed to allow various
spatial configurations that address the studio's multiplicity and in light of
its future expansion, allowing MFB to reinvent itself conceptually and
spatially.


Enjoying a sidewalk vitrine overlooking a busy
commercial street in Beirut, the project’s main space is designed to highlight
our clients’ process: Explore, Create and Share. In Explore, people gather to watch, discuss and learn in an informal
setting through events, talks and installations curated by MFB. Create is the team’s main workspace,
while Share is where projects are
presented and made public.&#38;nbsp;

A flexible architecture choreographs the
relationship between these spaces. Seating modules double as storage units. The
kitchen floor becomes a stage extending onto what once was a meeting table.


The
three mobile displays at MFB extend the studio’s sharing ethos by creating a
versatile system of display for temporary installations related to current
projects and events. They act as an interactive interface between the studio,
its visitors and the street, and can be moved to accomodate for different space configurations.

Exquisite Corpse is a fitness lounge whose name and spatial experience
references “cadavre exquis” a method of collecting words and images by
different people on a single folded piece of paper to create a deconstructed
anatomy.


The interior design of Exquisite Corpse spatializes this composition to
create a filtered set-up between its two functions: exercising and resting. One
of the main elements of this gym is a wall made of an irregular grid of glass
and mirrors that creates a distorted medium separating the viewer from the
other side.

This architectural element acts as a disruption to the otherwise
orthogonal gym, both in form and function. On one hand, the irregular shape of
the wall breaches the existing system of the gym. On another, it materializes
the space’s function, the pursuit of “another” body. In this case, the wall’s
grid can create moments where a viewer’s head is juxtaposed on a body of
another person on the other side through the interplay of glass and mirrors. While admitting the voyeuristic nature of a fitness center, this design
adds a layer of reflectivity on exercise as an practice of “becoming”.
