Sustainable Stratification: Stone waste experiments

The Strata series emerges from a groundwork of topographical studies, building on prior explorations into three-dimensional objects. Recognizing the surplus of waste produced by the construction industry, a solution is proposed by reimagining a natural resource, by drawing inspiration from the earth itself.

Inspiration

By examining the geological formations of cliffs and sea stacks, we delved into the textures and hues found within the intricate layers of dissimilar topographic strata. These formations, shaped by the forces of nature as well as human interventions, serve as a testament to the passage of time.

Waste as resource

In order to convey the vibrant hues of the natural world while upholding a commitment to sustainability, crushed stones that have not been utilized by the construction industry were explored as a medium for new formal possibilities.

The stones were crushed to achieve different color mixtures and densities.

The result is an assortment of textures and colors that can be explored when creating three dimensional objects.

Topographic layering

Mapping the topographic layers and colors found in nature to create functional surfaces that can be integrated in the home.

Drawing inspiration from existing topographies, the pieces are crafted to evoke the grandeur and intricacy of Parva, Magna, and Asteno rock formations.
